Does it really run in the family? Generational curse and our DNA

“Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.” (Matthew 27:25)

One of the New Age beliefs is that our lives here follow some sort of karma from past lives. Our objective is to break the karma spiral by getting to higher levels of spiritual development so we can finally rest in the cosmos.

In their book 'The second coming of the New Age', Steven Bancarz and Josh Peck explain how Dr. Michael Newton helped popularize the concept of karma from past lives. Through hypnosis, his patients described vivid memories from what seemed a different life. According to Dr. Newton, to be in touch with these memories - which were supposedly from the same person in a past life - helped treat current traumas.

Poverty, disease, bondage... is it only bad luck?

Have you ever wondered what makes us face our personal challenges? some people seem to be always surrounded by death and disease, others struggle financially, others can't be successful professionally or in their personal relationships. We all have different degrees of hardship and while no one can say their lives are perfect, we do see some that struggle more than others.

The karma theory is that we 'chose' the hardships we go through every time we are born again. Apparently the more difficult our lives, the more our spirits 'evolve' until we are free from our reincarnation cycle.

While the reincarnation debate is quite seductive for many Christians, if you ever thought any of it made any sense, I ask you one question: if we have the chance to start over in another life and pay for our mistakes, why would Yahusha’s sacrifice be necessary?

The truth is that as nice as it may seem, Christian doctrine and reincarnation are incompatible. Nowhere in the Bible we hear about reincarnation, but rather that we have only one life and after that our judgement.

'And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment' (Hebrews 9:27)

For the strong believer this topic is nothing new, but one concept that actually does have Biblical foundation is the idea of generational curse, or how I prefer to call, generational baggage.

'Now wait a minute, you mean I could be paying off a spiritual debt from my grand-grandmother?' Well, as surprising as it may seem, according to Scriptures, yes.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, Yahuah your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

'Yahuah is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’

but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

So going back to hypnosis, those being hypnotized and describing very complex spiritual experiences from a 'past life', could be merely suffering from demonic influence, or maybe the person has a creative imagination, or they could simply make it all up. It could be either option, but if you're up for a crazy theory, what if what the hypnotized person saw was not their own spirit’s past lives but the lives of their past generations?

Evolution or adaptation ?

Although the theory of evolution is nonsense not only from a theological perspective but also from a scientific perspective, it is undeniable that we have the capacity to adapt to the circumstances around us. Think about how darker skin is better suited to places with more sunlight or how Scandinavian’s light coloured eyes cope better in cold and snowy landscapes.

Though in essence we are all the same species, at some point our DNA was adapted to the external conditions. Our DNA contains the genetic information of our parents, who bring the genetic information of their parents and so on.

Let’s think of Adam. He was the first – the human Matrix out of which we all came from, even Eve. He had no genetic ‘inheritance’ from past generations. Now think about his first-born Cain. Cain, the first human conceived after our first parents fall, carried the weight of that sin and sinned himself. All his seed become tainted after he committed the first murder of mankind.

Now fast-forward to yourself and think about countless generations of idolatry, murder, theft, adultery, etc. that were practiced by people who never truly repented. On the other hand, we also carry the good genetic ‘inheritance’ from our ancestors who did what was good in the eyes of Yahuah and on top of all the good, the bad and the ugly, it's us - contributing to where our offspring will start off. Therefore, what Eastern religions call 'past lives karma', could in reality come from our ancestors’ sin and all baggage could be registered in our DNA.

Now as Yahusha passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

Yahusha answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of Yahuah should be revealed in him. (John 9:1-3)

Our DNA is a complex database that records our physical features, our physical weaknesses and strengths. But is that all there is? the amount of data we can store in our DNA is huge. What information is in our DNA besides the most obvious ones?

George Church, Ph.D., who is a Core Faculty member at the Wyss Institute and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), first pioneered the idea of using short synthetic DNA as a long-term information storage medium. His team first converted a complete book, including 5.27 megabits of text and images, into a binary digital code, which they then encoded in DNA, and finally decoded again using next-generation sequencing technology. It is estimated that 1 gram of DNA can hold up to ~215 petabytes (1 petabyte = 1 million gigabytes) of information, although this number fluctuates as different research teams break new grounds in testing the upper storage limit of DNA. Assuming the Avengers Endgame movie in 720p HD takes up 6 gigabytes, you can store ~36 million copies of the movie in one gram of DNA. Global digital data is expected to grow to 175 zettabytes (1 zettabyte = 1 million petabytes) by 2025, and because all the digital data in the world can be theoretically stored in ~81kg of DNA, DNA storage is being actively pursued as a compelling storage medium for the future.

Could the choices of our ancestors have impacted not only our spiritual road, but also have become physically engraved in our bodies?

If we think about Salomon, who was the son of adulterers and a father who committed murder, though by the time Salomon was born Bathsheba’s first husband was already dead (by the order of David) and the parents had repented and were forgiven by Yahuah, Salomon carried the consequence of his parent’s grave sin as we see in the sentence announced by the prophet to King David.

Yahuah forgave David, but he also gave his sentence: his son with Bathsheba would perish and David’s life from that moment on would have only war and strife and his own house would turn against him. It was after this episode that his daughter Tamar was raped by her own brother, triggering Absalom’s sin of murder and his conspiracy against David. What a shitshow… Notice how the consequence was not limited to David – the one who sinned – but it fell on his house.

A life full of sin will not necessarily mean eternal damnation, it’s the lack of repentance and submission to Christ that will do so. Nevertheless, if DNA 'registers' our actions, even after we are forgiven through the blood of Yahusha, it will still be part of our progeny. Given that only our Messiah could live a sinless life, in our human existence where sin happens constantly, it’s crucial for us to acknowledge the ‘cumulative’ impact of generation after generation of good and bad deeds out of which we came to be.

All our ancestors sinned, we sin, so is it all lost?

Absolutely not! Generational curses can be broken, and we should all make sure we acknowledge that we have generational baggage, asking for forgiveness for whatever our ancestors did.

As we approach the end of our tale in this realm – which can end soon or much later – it is fascinating to think that as generations come, the bigger the sin baggage will be. The world becomes worse also because our spiritual debt is the highest that has ever been.

If you don’t have children, the last one in the generational line has the responsibility to close it off and use the blood of Yahusha to acknowledge the generational sins. If you have children, make sure you break past generational curses and educate the next generations to mind how their lives have consequences on the spiritual battle that their progeny will endure later.

We should keep in mind that the condemnation is not transferred to the next generations, but the spiritual consequences. Through the sins of our ancestors, our offspring may have open doors for demonic oppression that will make their lives much more difficult. Nevertheless, only those who committed the wickedness will answer for that in judgement.

The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.

Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’ sins they will waste away. “ ‘But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, which made me hostile toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin, I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

Is this even fair?

Yahuah is always fair, so the reason for generational baggage is one of those mysteries of creation whose reasons we can only speculate, so I would speculate that the creation is so perfect that our experiences are accumulated in our DNA, making us the living history of those who lived before us. It helps us adapt, it helps us learn even without direct communication. We enjoy the benefits of the good inheritance we receive, but we also must deal with the bad one. The idea is that it should help us consider our choices not only because of the consequences they have on us, but also how that will affect the next generations.

Conclusion - 'it runs in the family'... but it doesn't have to

Yahusha has paid all our sins so we can now call Yahuah our Father. If you belong to Yahusha, rejoice in his amazing gift of life. We all nevertheless have many generations before us and it's worth asking for forgiveness on their behalf.

We can't change the past, but we can make sure the sins of our ancestors are forgiven and we can be mindful of what we are leaving behind.

Prayer Points to Break Generational Curses

Here are five prayer points to start with if you don’t know what prayers to pray against generational curses:

  1. Father God, reveal to me every generational curse in my bloodline from both sides of my family through your spirit in Jesus’ name.

  2. Christ has redeemed me from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for me. Every demonic force reinforcing generational curses in my life, leave my life alone, and go back to hell where you belong in Jesus’ name.

  3. It is written the curse causeless shall not come (Proverbs 26:2), and it is also written whom the Son has set free is free indeed. Generational curse of sickness, I command you to leave my life right now and go back to hell where you belong. Jesus has set me free, so you have no cause in my life.

  4. It is written in 2 Corinthians 8:9 Jesus became poor so that I might become rich by his poverty. You curse of poverty from both sides of my family, I declare that you are cancelled from my life and future generations in Jesus name.

  5. I cancel and nullify family curses that have been causing havoc in my life since childhood in Jesus’ name. I purify my body and life with the blood of Jesus, the blood that speaks better things than the blood of Abel in Jesus’ name.
